Connection to the Viking Trail (St Olav Waterway).

10. Trästa bridge

Trästabron is a high bridge that connects the mainland with Väddö. The bridge is 375 meters long and has a sail-free height of 17 meters, it was inaugurated on November 28, 1998 after many years of discussions. Plans to build a bridge have existed since the 1930s, including at Oxberget further north (see sign no. 24). The landfall on the mainland side is located on the border between Bergby and Trästa villages. On the Väddö side, the bridge lands in Fjäll. At the bridge abutment at Fjäll there is a milestone with the text: ½ Upprest af Wäddö och Häfwerö Skeppslag. The milestone stands about 5 km south of Grisslehamn on the post road that was laid to the new Grisslehamn in 1756. From the bridge there is an impressive view over Väddöviken with Singöfjärden on one side and Ortalaviken on the other. The annual Roslagsloppet, one of Sweden’s largest boat racing competitions, passes under the bridge, making the bridge a popular place for spectators. Trästabron is an important transport link between our villages and Väddö.

A ferry connection known as Fjällströmmen, dating back to the 1720s, existed before the Trästa Bridge was built. The first motor ferry arrived in 1937 and the connection operated until the bridge was inaugurated in 1998. However, the cable ferry only had room for eight cars at a time. There were often queues and long waiting times.

The Viking Trail, which stretches from Grisslehamn to Häverö Church and on to Gimo, passes over the Trästa Bridge. The Viking Trail is part of the famous Pilgrim’s Trail (St Olav Waterway) that leads from Turku across Åland all the way to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The Viking Trail offers a beautiful hiking trail through the varied Roslagen nature past cultural and historical sites.
