20. Norrby crossroads

Here at the Norrby crossroads where the village road connects to the main road is the bus stop. The buses were operated in the 1950s by SLO (Stockholms Läns Omnibussbolag). The trips run three times a day between Elmsta – Hallstavik and Grisslehamn – Hallstavik.
Stig Wedberg, who lives at Mellangården in the middle of the village, has built a garage down here at the crossroads. He starts a haulage business in the 1920s with a cab (taxi) and a truck and is contracted to carry out milk transports. In Markdal there is a small collection dairy until 1947 where the milk is collected and measured. The milk is then transported to the Häverödal dairy until 1949 and then to Norrtälje.
During the winter, the truck is parked here in the garage overnight. This is a necessity as the road through the village is not always open at the time when the milk transport is to take place. On these occasions, the farmers themselves have to drive the milk down to the main road by horse and sleigh. However, the main road between Älmsta and Hallstavik is ploughed by the road authority. From the garage, the milk transport from Norrby can arrive even in winter.
More haulage companies are gradually established in the area and soon there are cabs in Lindris, Häverödal, Hallstavik, Trästa, Grisslehamn and on Singö.
