5. Bergby mill
The windmill comes to Västerkulla in 1903. Farmer Jan Eric Olsson moves a simple windmill built in 1870 from the parish of Hargs. Miller Axel Carlsson, who previously ran the Ortala mill, takes over the operation in 1924. In 1927 he expands and modernizes the mill and removes the blades. It is first converted to diesel operation (an Atlas diesel) and later to electric operation.
Bergby mill is of great importance to the farmers of the area. With its high capacity, it can serve many farms, far more than just those in the villages of Norrby, Västerkulla and Bergby. In winter, horse-drawn carriages come over the ice from Fogdö, Singö, Trästa and Fjäll, and by land from Rotholma, Utsund, Markdal, Veda and Malmberga. During the summer, the farmers transport grain by boat to the pier in Bergby. For the transport up to the mill, they borrow a horse and cart. A stable building with several stalls still remains at the mill. When several farmers arrive at the same time, queues form. It is said that there could be a long queue of horse-drawn carts all the way down to the road during harvest time.
At the mill you can also buy groceries , including different types of flour and crispbread. The mill was in active use until 1970. At that time, the miller Carlsson had been grinding grain in Bergby mill for 46 years. Today, the mill stands empty and abandoned as a monument to bygone times.
