14. Bergby pier

Bergby pier is located on the border between Norrby and Bergby villages and was built in its current form in 1926. On both sides of the pier are boathouses and boathouses, several of them old and gray, built during the 19th century. In the past, each farm had its own boathouse for fishing and storing boats and equipment. Some of the boathouses are now located a bit up on land as a result of the land rise, which amounts to about 60 cm in 100 years.

Sailing ships and barges have long dominated the maritime traffic in Bergby. Many wood barges sail from the area with wood and herring to Stockholm. During the winters there can be over 20 ships anchored outside the jetty. Many of these ships find their final resting place here, the bay is full of old wrecks.

During the 1870s summer entertainment era in the archipelago, steamships began to dock at Bergby pier along the Stockholm-Öregrund route. Many city dwellers arrived by boat in the summer to stay at the local boarding houses. Next to the pier is a warehouse where Bergby Handel stores its goods and deliveries. Just south of the boathouses is the village bathing area, a small bay with a sandy bottom. Swimming lessons are held here every summer. Steamboat traffic ceased in 1952. In 1964, Bergbybadet was built further south (see sign 8).

The heyday of Bergby Pier is long gone. Steamboat traffic has ceased, the pier is in ruins, and only the occasional pleasure boat passes by. Today, peace and quiet reign at the pier.
