26. Hammarskogen

Industrialization during the 19th century drove a longing for outdoor life among city dwellers. This was the start of land areas with sports cabins during the first half of the 20th century. The vision was that even people with low incomes would have the opportunity to acquire a cabin for relaxation in nature. A sports cabin is intended to be used as a temporary home during leisure time. The word sports cabin disappeared during the 1940s and was replaced by holiday homes and summer cottages. There are several land areas in our villages; Sandvik, Hammarskogen and Norrby Udde.

Hammarskogen is a project designed by Riksbyggen in the late 1960s in collaboration with the construction company BPA. Hammarskogen stands for something new and is intended as a model area for holiday homes. Bergby’s old outlying land Hammarskogen of 95 hectares at Väddöviken is acquired. A development company, Bergby Fastighetsbolag, is formed together with Häverö Municipality. The company is responsible for the sale of the plots. The advertising brochures emphasize high sanitary standards with shared water and a new vacuum-controlled sewage system. The idea is that the holiday homes will eventually be able to be used for year-round living under the motto
Leisure for the Future . However, the building rights are limited to 80 plus 40 square meters, which reduces the possibilities for year-round living. In 1972/73, the first plots and some completed shell houses are sold. Hammarskogen comprises 166 plots, of which approximately 25 are currently used year-round. Typical of holiday home areas such as Hammarskogen and Norrby Udde are shared facilities such as a marina, swimming area, ball field and a party area. The social life and togetherness are extensive and contribute to the popularity of the areas.
