30. Norrby Udde
Industrialization during the 19th century drove a longing for outdoor life among city dwellers. This was the start of land plots with sports cabins during the first half of the 20th century. The vision was that even people with low incomes would have the opportunity to acquire a cabin for relaxation in nature. A sports cabin is intended to be used as a temporary home during leisure time. The word sports cabin began to disappear during the 1940s and was replaced by holiday home or summer cottage. However, in older times, summer cottage referred to a dwelling house on the farm, which the farm’s residents moved out to in the summer. There are several land plots in our villages; Sandvik, Hammarskogen and Norrby Udde.

Norrby Udde is a plot of land at the northern part of Väddöviken. The area was formed and developed by a small construction company in 1964 and is one of the first plot areas in the area. It is being developed in stages and today comprises 81 plots. The area was intended solely for summer residences and has, for example, only summer water.
A typical sports cabin was often simple, ready-to-assemble or built by the owner himself, with facades in pale red or dark brown wood. It had horizontal panels or log panels that imitated timber, and was often placed on plinths to minimize ground impact. Norrby Udde has several typical sports cabins, although many are now rebuilt and modernized.
Typical of holiday home areas such as Norrby Udde and Hammarskogen are shared facilities such as a marina, swimming area, ball field and a party area. The social life and togetherness are extensive and contribute to the popularity of the areas.
